Lake Natron & Rift Valley Adventure

    Flamingos, waterfalls & volcano landscapes

North of Mto wa Mbu, a rough road climbs and drops through Maasai country to Lake Natron, a shallow soda lake at the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment with Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano, rising beside it.

It is hot, remote and spectacular: walk up the Engare Sero gorge to a waterfall, look for lesser flamingos on the shore and — if you are fit and conditions allow — climb the volcano at night.

Ol Doinyo Lengai — a specialist climb

    • The ascent is steep, on loose volcanic ash, and usually starts around midnight to avoid the heat (roughly 5–6 hours up).
    • It suits fit, experienced hikers only. We assess fitness, weather and current volcanic activity separately before every climb.
    • The climb can be postponed or cancelled for safety. Travel insurance covering trekking is required.
    • Climbs are led by qualified local mountain guides.

    Flamingos & the lake

Lake Natron is an important breeding area for lesser flamingos, but their numbers on the shore change constantly with water levels and conditions. We never promise flamingo numbers, breeding activity or access to a particular part of the lake.

    Accommodation status

One of the area's established tented camps was reported destroyed by a storm in early 2026 and is being rebuilt. We are confirming current options directly with local operators and will propose accommodation only after checking its exact location and operating status for your dates.

    Extend to the northern Serengeti

From Lake Natron, a remote track continues north through Loliondo towards the northern Serengeti — a memorable way to link the Rift Valley with migration country. Route, road conditions and permits are confirmed at quotation.

    Frequently asked

    Will I see flamingos?
Often, but not always. Numbers vary with water levels and season, so we never promise them.
    How long is the drive?
About 5–6 hours from Arusha on a partly rough road.
Do I have to climb Ol Doinyo Lengai?
No — it is optional and only for fit, experienced hikers. The waterfall and lake walks are enjoyable for most travellers.
