Wildlife density vs. wilderness. The honest answer is: do both, but here's how to choose.
The Northern Circuit
Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara sit within a few hours of each other, so a first safari can see enormous variety in a week. Density of wildlife is unmatched — as is the number of vehicles in peak season.
The South and West
Ruaha, Nyerere (Selous) and Mahale are wilder, emptier and reached by light aircraft. Walking safaris and boat safaris are permitted in places where the north does not allow them. Sightings take longer to find and feel entirely your own.
How we usually advise
First trip, ten days or fewer: the north. Returning traveller, or someone who values solitude over checklists: the south. Two weeks or more: combine them, flying between circuits rather than driving.
